Cirencester Open Air Swimming Pool is an outdoor swimming experience in a unique setting, where residents and visitors to Cirencester can enjoy swimming in heated well-water, relaxing on our patio and enjoying refreshments in a beautiful location on the edge of Cirencester Park. For 15 weeks a year, the loyal committee has been keeping the pool open since May 1973 when Cirencester Town Council was unable to continue its involvement. Without the volunteer Committee, the pool would have closed.
Over the years, the historic site (built in 1869) has left a legacy of many mechanical and structural problems. Thanks to funding from a supportive donor, COASP recently embarked upon a visionary upgrade project to allow the pool to operate in a more economical and efficient way.. It has taken three years of background project management from the volunteer Committee Members and Trustees to make this project viable we believe and this achievement will benefit the town, visitors and residents of Cirencester.
Phase 1 has been completed on time and on budget, providing a new main building, with ladies, gents and disability changing rooms, toilets and showers, function room (for hire), plant room, chemical stores and workshop
Phase 2 concentrated on several areas, we were very grateful to receive grant funding from St James Place and Gloucestershire Environmental Trust. A new wider entrance to Riverside Walk enables families and pushchairs more room; a designated reception area and desk; new fencing alongside Riverside Walk was made bespoke to incorporate the storage of new pool covers; an extra entrance and exit with turnstile which will help the flow of people on busy days on and off the pool site; improved disabled access to the rear gate with ramp and handrail; new patio to Riverside Walk side of pool. We were unable to complete the purchase and installation or photo voltaic panels to the main building roof but the fixings and connections are in place to enable us complete this.
Many thanks for grant funding received during our recent upgrade Phase 2 project from St James Place and Gloucestershire Environmental Trust.
Project work for future improvements includes purchase of photo voltaic panels and installation to assist with our considerable heating costs. New patio to remainder of pool site, in the style of the recent upgrade to Riverside Walk area. Demolition and removal of old changing rooms to rear of the site and development of this area. New tuck shop, enabling a greater range of food and refreshments to be served in a larger, better equipped building.
How can you assist with Phase 3?
We would like to find a volunteer project manager who could assist us in what could be several smaller projects as we source funding. This may suit a retired person with experience in build projects and site management. If you can help us, please make contact, we would very much like to have an informal discussion. Email firstname.lastname@example.org or come and see us at the pool.
You can, of course, make a donation to assist us with our future upgrades, details are on our Donate tab. Our plans will help us become sustainable and cost effective, offering an improved visitor experience and attracting more pool users. We would like to build relationships with a variety of sources including trusts and foundations, businesses and private donations.
